A good implant material allows normal facial contours after the surgery and encourages natural and rapid tissue growth within and through it, which are known to be the primary properties of GORE-TEX implant.
GORE-TEX implant is a subcutaneous augmentation material (SAM) made of biocompatible microporous ePTFE (expanded polytetraflouroethylene) for the repair or enhancement of the soft tissues of the facial area. It is likewise biologically inert, adding to its appeal as a good implant material. It is used to fill facial lines, wrinkles and nasolabial folds, plump up lips, and augment nose, chin or cheek.
This implant provides permanent results, requires no allergy-testing and can be trimmed to fit. Given the durability of gore-tex and the body’s acceptance of it, this material lasts a lifetime. Oftentimes it is judged as the best implant by many nasal surgery masters.
GORE-TEX implant is one of the recent advances in nasal augmentation which was discovered in 1958. Originally, it was used in pulmonary and heart valve operations because of its strength, biocompatibility and ability to carry blood at arterial pressure without leaking. With its non-biodegradable properties, in 1975, FDA approved the expanded use of this material as a replacement for human tissue including its use in facial plastic surgery.
Human Tissue Growth Through And Within
Unlike with silicone implant wherein tissues simply encapsulate around it, GORE-TEX has the ability to incorporate into the surrounding tissue thus eliminating material rejection, eventual nasal contractions and other complications. GORE-TEX implant’s pore sizes range from 0.5 to 30 microns. Over time, human tissues grow into these empty spaces within it helping anchor the implant in the treated area. This natural and rapid growth of tissues within and through the implant allows our bodies to treat it as something not foreign.
Moreover, the material’s softness assures patient comfort. Its suppleness makes it easy for the skilled surgeon to work with it even in difficult reconstructions. These “soft tissue patches” as they are usually called provide the necessary strength, flexibility and thickness for the most demanding surgical repairs. The structure of the material does not fray allowing the surgeon to sew the patch more easily.
GORE-TEX offers a safe, permanent yet revisable implant with excellent healing properties.
As with the other types of surgeries, the patient will have some swelling, bruising and mild discomfort within 1 to 2 weeks. These will be relieved by taking prescribed pain relievers and antibiotics. Much of the swelling goes on the 6th day, upon removal of the nasal splint and the sutures. Some people with deskbound jobs go back to work after 3-5 days. However, for some whose jobs require strenuous activity (i.e. athletes, field engineers, etc.), it may take about 2-3 weeks to return to work.
More important, since GORE-TEX implant is safe with nil case of rejection, the patient usually resumes its normal activities without altering his lifestyle. Once healed, few months after the operation, the patient can still engage in contact sports such as volleyball, scuba diving, and the likes. Aside from that, the patient doesn’t have to worry of heat exposure since GORE-TEX implant can stand a wide range of temperature.
